THE MISSION

In April 2005 following the February 2005 Rajasthan Relief Ride, RRI Executive Director Alexander Souri conducted a relief assessment tour of the tsunami-stricken region of southern Sri Lanka. RRI has been in continuing communication with the Ministry of Health to determine the best use of our resources for our January 2006 trip.

Our relief mission will address some critical needs: delivery of necessary medical care and information; and critical educational materials for hard-hit local schools. Guided by Relief Riders’ experienced support team, we will be bringing school supplies to at least four local schools. At the same time we will be providing much-needed pediatric care for the children. Working with the Ministry of Health we will host two other medical clinics for adults and children. Details are still being discussed.

THE RIDE

A maximum of 8 riders will embark on a 15-day, 170km journey to provide much-needed to the tsunami-damaged southern coastal towns of Sri Lanka

Riders will arrive in Colombo and stay overnight in a fine hotel. During the ride our accommodations will consist of hotels and tented encampments set up by our support team along the journey route. Riders will average 20 - 25 miles a day, about three to five hours a day of riding at a comfortable pace, stopping for three delicious meals a day featuring local specialties.

We have designed our 15-day Tsunami relief ride to create meaningful interactions between our travelers and local residents. As always, at the beginning of all our journeys all participants, based on their life experience and skills, will be assigned certain responsibilities including: helping to organize the caravan, volunteering with the medical team, and helping to facilitate the distribution of the supplies.

As we travel to each village, riders will help to set up the medical camps, work with the Ministry of Health team, distribute books and other educational materials to local school.

We will, of course, be traveling through areas of great natural beauty, with lush beaches and natural game reserves, rich in culture and wildlife. As we stop along the way, we will experience and enjoy some of Sri Lanka’s unique cultural life, sampling the region’s culinary specialties.
